Structural order parameter and itinerant electron magnetism in Cd2Re2O7
We describe the low temperature behaviour of the magnetic susceptibility of Cd2Re2O7 in terms of a Landau theory of structural phase transitions. We calculate the zero temperature Pauli susceptibility using a tight-binding approach to reveal the mechanism of coupling between the structural order parameter and itinerant magnetism.
متن کاملA thermodynamic framework for a system with itinerant-electron magnetism
Thermodynamic fluctuation among many electronic states in systems with ‘itinerant-electron’ magnetism is addressed with a first-principles formulation of the Helmholtz energy. The Ce γ –α phase transition is used as an illustrative case. The kB ln(2J + 1) form for the magnetic entropy that is commonly found in the literature is replaced with an expression that is derived from configurational fl...
متن کاملA simple model for magnetism in itinerant electron systems
A new lattice model of interacting electrons is presented. It can be viewed as a classical Hubbard model in which the energy associated to electron itinerance is proportional to the total number of possible electron jumps. Symmetry properties of the Hubbard model are preserved. In the half-filled band with strong interaction the model becomes the Ising model. The main features of the magnetic b...
متن کاملItinerant Magnetism in Metallic CuFe2Ge2
Theoretical calculations are performed to understand the electronic structure and magnetic properties of CuFe2Ge2. The band structure reveals large electron density N(EF) at the Fermi level suggesting a strong itinerant character of magnetism. The Fermi surface is dominated by two dimensional sheet like structures, with potentially strong nesting between them. The magnetic ground state appears ...
متن کاملMagnetism in dense hexagonal iron.
The magnetic state of hexagonal close-packed iron has been the subject of debate for more than three decades. Although Mössbauer measurements find no evidence of the hyperfine splitting that can signal the presence of magnetic moments, density functional theory predicts an antiferromagnetic (afm) ground state. This discrepancy between theory and experiment is now particularly important because ...
